5 Reasons Why Stargate Universe Isn’t In the Top 25

I am an avid fan of the Stargate series. I love everything about Jack O'Neill, Sam Carter, Teal'c, Daniel Jackson, General Hammond, John Sheppard, Ronan, Teyla, Rodney, Carson Beckett. The others were pretty okay but these were the series makers!

I always felt that producers Brad Wright & Rob Cooper had the right formula for the Stargate series. It was almost like magic. I take that back - it was MAGIC! People loved the characters. They were likable as were the episode plots & story arcs.

But now, with the Stargate Universe, it anything but magic. And I am anything but avid. No chemistry, no humor, no adventure, no likable characters (except just Eli - if the rest died, it might be a show saver!!).

5 reasons why Syfy has lost its touch on Stargate series:

1. A CopyCat. Nobody loves a copycat, a wannabe. Who in the friggin' ascended universe would want to see a Battlestar-Galatica or Star Trek Voyager wannabe? No one, that's who. Not even the Ancients, that why they had the foresight to leave Destiny a whole long time ago!

2. Dark, Grim – Get Real! In line with the BSG , why would anyone in their highly developed super-human mind want to watch dark & grim when we get it on real life? After a tough day at work, being barked at by the boss, scrambling to handle the work load, pulling a muscle due to stress, the last I want to see is... yup, you said it - grim.

3. Unlikable, un-stick-able characters. Characters are really REALLY annoying & totally unlikable.. except Eli. Hey, when we watch shows, we want to like the characters. That's plural, not singular. Not get mad or annoyed with them day in, day out. Likability has its appeal - like ratings appeal. Last I checked, SG:U isn't even on the top 25 shows.

4. A reality show episode plot. Seriously, what is this? Where are the hordes of aliens and aliens living on planets? Where's the adventure? What's up with freakin' reality show style going on? No one wants another real-life drama style.. especially on a sci-fi movie. It’s Sci-Fi, for goodness sake!

5. A missing (or yet to be seen) story arc. Its already pretty late in the series and yet there's no story arc here. Again, what's up with BSG & Star Trek Voyager wannabe: finding the way back home. But Star Trek Voyager was way more interesting even with this “We are trapped in some bloody universe finding our way back home” theme. Oh boy, it's going to be another long season...

The only and ONLY thing I like: superb effects!

... Unfortunately, not enough for me to stay on as a fan. I am just looking forward to the Atlantis tv movie. And yes, after Season 1, if things don’t go back to magic of Stargate, I am going to leave SG:U to spend my time with truly great shows!

Have a blast!

I agree whole heartedly with what you've said apart from Eli, I find him as unlikable as the rest of the cast. SG:U is not only dark in the grim sense but also dark in the literal sense in that it's often difficult to actually see what is going on. After a hard day I want to be entertained, taken on a thrilling ride and to see aliens and planets that thrill my imagination. I congratulate you on staying the course I gave up at the mid season cliff-hanger when I realised I didn't care if Rush was saved or not. The only episode I've seen since then is Human and only that one because my all time favorite character, Daniel Jackson, was in it.

Yeah, I too just loved seeing Daniel Jackson again.. I really do miss the old crew!

You're absolutely right! The reason I loved the SG series was because of the adventure. Both SG-1 & Altantis never failed to impress!

Unfortunately, this whole new show is more like a sci-fi goth show!

Don't congratulate me just yet. I just may forget about SG:U. It's not like I really want to watch it. Sad, isn't it..

Interesting reading this post of yours. Yo me it's obvious that you have started watching SGU in a wrong way. It should not be taken as a continuation to Atlantis or SG-1 but as a new entity in the same universe.

While SGU is different in many, many ways, it doesn't automatically make it a bad series. I have been a Stargate fan since I was ten years old and I think SGU is at least as great as Atlantis and SG-1 were in their early years. Surely Universe has had it's bad moments (Life, meh) but so did Atlantis and SG-1! I, for one, disliked Emancipation (SG-1 episode four) and Childhood's End (Atlantis episode 6) at least as much as I dislike Life.

On the brighter side, Stargate Universe has had it's great moments as well. Even though I haven't been able to relate to any of its characters (yet), they feel pretty cool and realistic to me.

I'm not going to go comparing SGU with the previous two series in Stargate franchise because, as I stated, they are separate things. Instead, I'll give you my views of your "5 reasons".

1. A CopyCat
Stargate Universe is NOT a copycat of Battlestar Galactica or Star Trek Voyager or anything else. If you are serious about this "reason", you should watch the series for real. There are certain similarities, such as the spaceship being the main environment, but that's pretty much it.

2. Dark, Grim – Get Real!
Well, not everyone's life is dark and grim. Plus, I think it's nice that Stargate has courage to do something else than use the same medieval villages all over again for a while. And by the way, if you have seen episodes like Faith, you know it's definitely NOT always dark out there in the universe...

3. Unlikable, un-stick-able characters
They're definitely not unlikable nor are they "un-stick-able". I don't have my personal favourite character yer but I like most of them. They are different and not always perfect but the make up for a good, tense series. And I like that.

4. A reality show episode plot
Seriously? Show me the reality show where the stars are in a spaceship on the other side of the universe with a STARGATE. C'mon. You must be joking. And by the way, there are adventures. We must have been watching two different shows.

5. A missing (or yet to be seen) story arc
SGU doesn't have a main enemy (at least not yet) but it doesn't mean it doesn't have a story arc. The first season has clearly been about settling for life on Destiny as well as getting home. And by the way, BSG and STV aren't the only/the first series using the theme of getting home. It's certainly a cliché but it works to me.

I understand well that not everyone can like everything and that everyone is entitled to their opinions but you should definitely give SGU a real chance. Judging by your post, it seems that you are one of those who got angry with the cancellation of Atlantis so much that they decided that Universe was going to suck from the start. That's not the way to do it. Open-mindedness is the key word, and maybe you'll some day see the SGU's goodness. Not that I myself like every single thing in the series.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I do appreciate your honest feedback.

About the reality show reason:

"Seriously? Show me the reality show where the stars are in a spaceship on the other side of the universe with a STARGATE "

Stargate Universe!

Anyway, I was being figurative. Obviously it's not a reality show, but the acting direction is similiar to one (especially with the Kino and all..)

Actually, when news of SG:U came out, I got realy excited about SG:U. I loved the Stargate series so I was looking forward to it. I didn't expect it to be like Atlantis.

And being a sci-fi fan and fan of other shows, I do love a combo of different styles & plots but one that never got stuck on me was the dark & grim shows like BSG (I lasted only 1 episode).

Btw, dark & grim is not about the lighting, but the typical mood of the show. Even Faith was dark & grim even if it was a sunshiny day!

I respect your thots and your interest in SG:U. And that's awesome!

As for me, I've lost all interest in it and am more eager for the Atlantis movie now. However, this doesn't mean I won't be watching future SG series just because of SG:U.

Thanks again & God bless!
